DANVILLE, KY—Two individuals at Centre College have received awards from the Danville-Boyle County National Association of the Advancement of Colored People.

Justin Atkins, a Centre College freshman and a youth branch member of the NAACP, received the William Grey Scholarship Award.

J.H. Atkins, assistant vice president and associate professor of education at Centre, received the Danville-Boyle County Annual Civic Award for 2002.

Justin is the son of J.H. Atkins.

J.H. Atkins and his wife, Artie, are lifetime members of the NAACP. Justin Atkins is a youth member, but says he aspires to become a life member of the organization.

"I was surprised about the award, yet pleased to learn that someone had recognized me for my civic efforts in our community," J.H. Atkins said. "Artie and I work with the NAACP on the community Martin Luther King celebration/poster contest, Citizens Concerned For Human Relations activities, the Freedom Fund Banquet and the Heritage Festival. The organization continues to work for improved human rights and local voter registration drives, and sponsors youth programs."

Justin Atkins, a defensive lineman on the football team, has also participated in the annual Heritage Festival and has taken part in the Martin Luther King poster contest for the past five years.

"I feel honored to receive this scholarship," he said.
