Athlete has a sport for every season

Solomon Parker making mark on football field, basketball court and track

RELEASED: January 16, 2002

DANVILLE, KY-Solomon Parker is a three-sport standout for the Centre College Colonels. Parker plays football, basketball, and runs track. And Parker is an example of how an individual can manage time so as to participate in their favorite activities outside the classroom at Centre.

This past fall Centre won nine football games, the most wins in a season since 1921. Parker was instrumental in the Colonels' success starting at outside linebacker.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore recorded 36 tackles, including four tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries, and three pass breakups.

Head coach Andy Frye is high on Solomon.

"He's developing into a very good football player, and he earned a starting position on an excellent team. Solomon's strength is his passion to be better every day. He's well-liked by his teammates, and it's definitely reassuring to know that he'll be back for two more years."

A standout defensive player on the basketball team, Parker also is an exceptional high jumper, triple jumper, and long jumper on the track team. In a track meet last spring, he cleared 6 feet in the high jump.

Parker is not the only Centre athlete participating in three sports. Ben Campbell, a junior from Staunton, Va.., has participated in cross country, swimming and track.

Centre is a Division III school of the NCAA and competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which is made up of 10 schools in Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, and Indiana.
