DANVILLE, KYSeveral members of Centre College's fall sports teams have been honored by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
In football, the Colonels placed nine players on the first and second all-conference teams.
Ely Santos was chosen the co-Special Teams Player of the Year. The senior wide receiver led the SCAC in kickoff returns this season. Santos was a first-team all-SCAC performer. Also on the first team from Centre were John Ortega, Daniel Nipp, Bryan Walker and John Jennings. Second-team honorees were Lorenzo Engleman, Jeff Reynolds, Brian Downs and Solomon Parker.
Honorable mention honorees were Sam Beiting, Matt Johnson, Matt Ellis, Matt Tierney and Nick Zilich.
The football team ended the season with a 6-4 mark. The Colonels are 15-5 over the past two seasons.
In volleyball, Leah Ballinger and Lauren Crissey were named to the SCAC all-conference team.
"Both Leah and Lauren are very deserving of this honor," said head coach Stephanie Dragan. "Lauren was our only senior and gave us lots of leadership and four good years. She is a model person to have on your team. Thank goodness we have Leah for two more years. She's willing to do anything asked of her to make the team better."
Brenna Bulach was second in the SCAC Freshman of the Year voting.
Centre volleyball finished the season with a 23-19 record.
After a sterling season, the men's soccer team placed five players on the SCAC all-conference team.
The Colonels went 13-3-2 in 2002 and were ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation at one point.
Mike Weckenbrock, who led the Colonels in scoring with 26 points, was a first-team member. Second-team honorees were Jacob Sither and Stan Simek. Making the third team was Alex Marsden and Jeff Cottrill.
Jennifer Riggs was named second team All-SCAC for the Centre women's soccer team, which finished at 7-8-1. It was the third year in a row Riggs was named to the all-conference squad.
Jessica Chisley and Laura Heil were named to the third team.
Head coach Gina Nicoletti praised her players and team. "We had a good year considering the number of injuries we had. Chisley was having a great year until a season-ending leg injury. It probably kept her from making first team All-Conference. Riggs continues to improve as does Heil. All of these ladies are extremely deserving of their post-season honors."
