Centre College honors seven employees

DANVILLE, KY-Seven employees of Centre College were recognized with service awards during the school's annual employee appreciation dinner Tuesday, May 21. They are Ronald Allen, Norman Jenkins, Edle Casey, Gary Crase, Glenda Beaven, Brad Hundley and Allis McLaughlin.
In addition, the college recognized employees who are retiring, outstanding teachers and individuals who have reached milestones of service to the college, ranging from five to 35 years.
Allen, Jenkins and Casey received Horky Service Awards, which were created by a bequest from John and Lorette Horky of Danville to honor unique and exemplary service to Centre. Crase, Beaven and Hundley were honored with Centre Recognition Awards, which salute persons who have unselfishly served the college community. Allis McLaughlin received the Presidential Award for Excellence, honoring exceptional work during the past year.
Allen, a zone mechanic for the physical plant staff, has been an employee of Centre since 2000. Jenkins is the lead custodian at Sutcliffe Athletic Center. He has been at Centre since 1989. Casey, a general service technician, joined Centre in 1978.
Instrument and Lab Technician Crase has worked at Centre since 1989. Beaven, executive secretary for Administrative Services, joined Centre in 1998. Hundley is a public safety officer, a title he has held since joining Centre in 1994.
An 11-year Centre employee, McLaughlin is the director of the Parson's Wellness Center. Before coming to Centre she served as a clinic nurse for the weight management program at Ephraim McDowell Regional Health Center.
The college recognized several faculty and staff members that are retiring this year: Professor of English Roberta White, who has taught at Centre since 1967; Professor of Religion Eric Mount, who joined the school in 1966; Truly Mount, who has served as a visiting instructor of French since 1979; Barbara Hanson, a 1954 Centre graduate, has been coordinator of instructional media since 1980; and custodian Frances Walker who started at Centre in 1984.
Others retiring who were recognized included Joe McDaniel, former football coach and athletic director, and Walter Gooch, vice president for Administrative Services.
This year's Kirk Award winners were Eric Mount, Professor of Government Larry Matheny and Professor of Economics Bob Brownlee.
The Kirk Award for excellence in teaching was endowed by a gift by from a member of the Board of Trustees in 1995. This endowment has recognized excellent teachers on Centre's faculty every year since 1996.
