| Smith makes mad dash, softball players honored

DANVILLE, KY-Centre College sprinter Sean Smith placed 14th in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA National Championships at St. Paul, Minn., May 23-25.
Smith, a sophomore from Louisville, broke the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record in the 200 meters last month with a time of 21.69 seconds.
In other Centre sports news, Berea Ernst of Kettle, Ky., and Erin Grumley of Belleville, Ill., were named to All-SCAC first team in softball.
Ernst, a junior, made the team as the designated hitter as she batted .333 with six doubles, a triple and 12 RBI's this season. Ernst also stole 12 bases.
Grumley, a freshman pitcher, led the conference with an ERA of 1.42 and posted a 12-11 record with two saves. She threw 17 complete games including three shutouts.
"We're so proud of Erin and Berea," said head coach Wendie Austin. "The performance of these two young ladies is one of the main reasons for our improved season. They're a joy to coach and we're glad to have them back next year."
The Lady Colonels improved from a 4-28 record last year to 15-19 in 2002.
Making honorable mention for the Lady Colonels were Jessica Chisley of Frankfort, Ky., and Lindy Pritchard from Lebanon, Ohio.
