Centre dance students present 'Stellar' program

RELEASED: May 9, 2002

DANVILLE, KY-Centre dance students will present a free performance titled "Lumens" on May 11 at 8 p.m. in Newlin Hall on the Centre campus. Directed by Rebecca Stephenson, the program will be divided into five sections, all based on the theme of the stars.

Stephenson says, "Humankind has long been fascinated and inspired by the stars. Many cultures have created myths surrounding the stars, from wishing upon a star to naming constellations after mythologies from their cultures. The imagery in this concert is intended to portray a variety of ideas surrounding the luminosity of the night sky."

The first section of the program is titled "Constellations." The dancers will represent constellations including Aquila, Cassiopeia, Columba, Corona Borealis, Cygnus, Delphinus, Drago, Indus, Lynx, Mensa, Pegasus and Volans.

The next section, titled "Portals," will be set up with three panels that allow the dancers to cast shadows from behind them. Openings between the panels will enable the dancers to enter and exit. This portion of the program will represent the mystery between humans and the heavens and glimpses of otherworldliness.

The third piece, called "Light Crossings," will give the audience the feel of light rays moving across the sky.

The fourth section, "Stellar," will showcase fast dynamic movement, and the final piece, "Auroro Borealis," will include partnering work and lifts.

Special lighting effects including black light and glow paint have been designed by Mark de Araujo and Monica Wauck to make the dancers appear as stars and light rays crossing the night sky. Music for this program includes songs from Moby, Moulin Rouge 2, Appollo 44 and Shamen.
