| Mooney involved in three-for-all
Senior guard named Player of the Week in SCAC behind torrid shooting
RELEASED: Feb. 7, 2002
DANVILLE, KY-You could say Matt Mooney was a triple threat in conference play last week.
The 6-foot senior guard from Dixon, Ky., drained an amazing 11 three-point shots in Centre's 104-102 double-overtime loss Friday to Rhodes. In one of the best single-game three-point shooting exhibitions in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference history, he scored an SCAC season-high 38 points. He was 12-for-18 from the field, and 11 of 16 from behind the three-point arc.
"Matt had as impressive a shooting performance as you'll see at the college level," Centre Coach Greg Mason said. "He deserves his success. His work ethic is exemplary. Matt's attention to detail helps make him the shooter he's been for us the past four years."
Mooney added 17 points (hitting five three-pointers this time around) in just 23 minutes of action in the Colonels' 80-48 victory against Hendrix on Sunday.
For his efforts, Mooney has been named Player of the Week in the SCAC.
With the 11 shots from downtown in the Rhodes contest, he broke Coach Mason's school record for most three-pointers in a game and tied the league record for most three-point field goal attempts in a contest.
For the week, Mooney shot 64.3 percent from the field (18-28), including 66.7 percent from three-point range (16-24), and averaged 27.5 points per game. He also chipped in with three rebounds, two assists and two steals as Centre moved to 7-5 in league play good for fifth in the SCAC.
Mooney is currently fifth in the league in scoring (15.6 ppg) as well as 12th in the SCAC in steals (1.26 spg).
After his three-point fest over the weekend, Mooney is leading the conference in three-point field goals made per game (3.6) and three-point field goal percentage (45.9 percent). If he continues his current pace (he has hit 68 of 148 three-pointers this season), Mooney would eclipse the league's all-time single-season record of 89 three-pointers set by Centre graduate David DeMarcus during the 1992-93 season.
