Centre College receives Arthur Vining
Davis Foundations' Award for Excellence

RELEASED: April 25, 2002

DANVILLE, KY-Centre College was recently named the recipient of the 2002 Arthur Vining Davis Foundations' Award for Excellence — the only school in the country to receive this honor. This distinction was announced at last week's Board of Trustees meeting on campus.

Centre was selected from a strong group of candidates in recognition of the college's exceptional student-centered approach to residential liberal learning, its commitment to teaching and its sustained achievement in transforming its students' lives.

In accepting the award, President John Roush said, "We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. It's particularly encouraging to know that the Award for Excellence is based on criteria that affirm our strongest values and mission."

The Award for Excellence includes a $200,000 grant to advance the quality of the College. In previous years, Centre has received grants from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to support information technology initiatives, library automation, athletic facilities and the Norton Center for the Arts.

Dr. Jonathan T. Howe, executive director of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, spent a day at Centre last year visiting with President Roush, senior administrators, faculty and students. In announcing the award, Howe congratulated President Roush and said, "We are very impressed with the job you and your team are doing at Centre to change lives."

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations is a national philanthropic organization based in Jacksonville, Fla. The organization was established through the generosity of the late American industrialist Arthur Vining Davis.
