Masterful painter to exhibit work on campus

RELEASED: Sept. 19, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—The Centre College Art Program will host an exhibit of paintings entitled "The Refugee Pictures" by Thuan Vu. Vu's works will be displayed in the Aegon Gallery of Centre's Jones Visual Arts Center. The exhibit will be open Sept. 23-Oct. 31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A reception for the artist will be held on Oct. 25 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Aegon Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.

Sheldon Tapley, Centre professor and chair of the art program, comments, "The paintings in this show concentrate on self-portraiture but include many other elements that dazzle the viewer: richly colored landscapes, silvery light, dreamlike scenes, and a playful use of black and white imagery."

Vu has exhibited works in Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in art from Centre in 1995, Vu studied at Louisiana State University, where he received a master of fine arts degree. He is currently an assistant professor of art at Southern Connecticut State University, where he teaches drawing and painting.

"My paintings visually explore the cause and effects of displacement," Vu said. His family was driven from Vietnam when he was two years old. This past summer, Vu returned to Vietnam, and the images in his paintings poignantly capture this emotional homecoming.
