Ortega, Walker named Players of the Week in SCAC

Football team improves to 3-0

RELEASED: Sept. 26, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College's John Ortega and Bryan Walker captured the defensive and offensive Player of the Week awards in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for their efforts in the Colonels' 28-7 win over Rhodes in Memphis last weekend.

Ortega, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior from Prestonsburg, Ky., recorded 14 tackles, one pass breakup and one interception as the Colonels grabbed their first conference win. Ortega is a pre-season first-team d3football.com All-American and also stars for the Centre baseball team.

Walker, a 6-2, 185-pound senior wide receiver from Cincinnati, caught five passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's win. The touchdown receptions were for 67, 16, and 15 yards and equaled a Centre College single-game record. For the season, Walker is averaging 60.7 yards per game and has nine catches for 182 yards and four touchdowns.

"Walker had a great game for us," said head coach Andy Frye. "He made a couple of big-time catches and had the best game of his career. Ortega is deserving of his pre-season honor. He's worked hard and made lots of sacrifices to be a very good football player. He's played like this more than once."

The Colonels will entertain Washington and Lee University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. during Centre Family Weekend. The Colonels are undefeated in three games this season and have won six in a row dating back to Centre's 9-1 season in 2001.
