Trend of building on-campus burial plots explored RELEASED: July 11, 2002
The University of Virginia, University of Richmond and Bucknell University were some of the other colleges featured in the article that looked at the growing trend of selling plot space on campuses throughout the country. Alumni quoted in the story spoke of the attachment they had for their alma mater, and that they could not think of a more beautiful place to be buried than on their college campus. The University of Richmond recently opened a $1 million columbarium. The structure has room for several thousand people. Several years ago Mount Saint Mary's College in Maryland polled 300 of its alumni and 70 percent said they would be interested in new burial grounds on campus. The school made room for hundreds of new plots and they have nearly sold out. The school is discussing making room for more plots. Centre built its columbarium, a vault with individual niches for cremated remains, on campus last year. The columbarium was constructed at the urging of alumni. There are 84 spaces at Centre, 80 of which are still available. - end - Communications Office Centre College 600 W.
