| Zilich named April Volunteer of the Month
RELEASED: May 16, 2002
DANVILLE, KY-Centre junior Nick Zilich has been selected as Volunteer of the Month for April for his participation in Repair Affair, a program sponsored by C.A.R.E., which assists area residents by making needed home repairs.
"Nick volunteered on both Repair Affair dates and worked very hard," said Trina McFarland, director of volunteer service. "The second day, he stayed all day and helped build steps in the rain. We're lucky to have him at Centre."
"Repair Affair is a project that reaches many, many people and allows anyone to give their time to those in need around their own community," Zilich said. "Skill and experience are not needed at all, so it is something for everyone. It requires us to slow our lives down to reach the needs of those less fortunate. It takes time, and that's the most valuable gift someone can give."
In addition to C.A.R.E., Zilich volunteers with local Christian groups and was a youth leader at the local Presbyterian Church. He works with the L.I.F.T. program and gives as much time as possible to CCF. He also mentors a fifth grade boy.
"A life that's made a difference in the lives of others is the epitome of success," Zilich said. "All it takes is time, putting your personal desires aside in order to give your time to those in need."
Centre College launched the volunteer award program to show appreciation to the many students who provide service to the local community. Each year, around 60 percent of all Centre students become community volunteers. The college encourages volunteer service by planning a community service day each year for all first-year students. Trina McFarland serves as Centres director of volunteer service.
Kentuckys highest ranked national institution, Centre is listed by U.S. News and World Report among the countrys top 50 national liberal arts colleges, and is the most affordable in that group. Centre leads all colleges and universities in the percentage of alumni who give annual financial support.
