Freshman Adair Howell heads to Big Apple for Cosmo contest

DANVILLE, KY—This week Adair Howell has led the life of a typical freshman. She's learning how to get around Centre's campus, buying her books, working hard at volleyball practice and making new friends.
Next week she'll be in New York City, hanging out with Katie Couric and Jillian Barberie, and having a chance to land on the cover of Cosmopolitan.
Howell, of Atlanta, is one of four contestants vying to win the "Cosmo Cover Model Search." More than 500 models sent in entries early this year.
The freshman will travel to New York next week and the winner will be announced at a party on Sept. 9. Entertainment Tonight will announce the winner on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. (ABC, WTVQ-TV in Lexington, Ky.) The Centre volleyball team will watch the proceedings at the Combs Centre. The Centre community is invited to attend. Howell and the three other contestants are also tentatively scheduled to appear Sept. 10 on The Today Show and Good Day Live.
"I'm nervous," said Howell, who has appeared in Cosmopolitan three times this year, "but being at Centre has helped take my mind off next week."
Howell will miss three days of classes, but said she met with the associate dean of the college to make sure she stays on top of her course work.
She reported to campus with other student-athletes on Aug. 17.
"The first week was rough," she said. "Just being away from home. But it's getting better. The girls on the volleyball team are really supportive. It's a beautiful campus, and I know more about it now."
In spite of a sore shoulder, the 6-foot-1 middle hitter is also adjusting well on the court.
"On the court she's not afraid to speak her mind, and a lot of freshmen don't do that," said head coach Stephanie Dragan. "When she's 100 percent, she'll be an outstanding player.
"We have a very tight group of players. Adair gets along well with everyone. She's very outgoing."
