| Maier and Timoney named April Volunteers of the Month
DANVILLE, KYTwo Centre juniors, Mark Maier and Nessa Timoney, have been selected as April Volunteers of the Month for their work as coordinators of the College's blood drives for the Central Kentucky Blood Center. "This was the second blood drive organized by Mark and Nessa this year, and they're pros," said Trina McFarland, director of volunteer services at Centre. "They handled every aspect of the event and thought of every detail. They were responsible for advertising the drive, recruiting donors, communicating with the CKBC and staffing the drive, and they carried everything off flawlessly. According to the staff, Nessa and Mark made the drive successful and exceptionally pleasant."
"The Blood Drive is very important because when you donate, you're giving the gift of life to someone else," he said. "It doesn't take that much time out of the day to donate, but the rewards can't be measured. "For me it's comforting to think that because I sacrificed 15 minutes of my day, someone else that I'll never meet will have the chance to celebrate the rest of their life. It's been a lot easier now that Nessa and I have been working together, because no matter how much work she has on the day of the blood drive, she'll be there to see it through." The volunteer award program at Centre recognizes some of the many students who provide service to the local community. Each year, around 60 percent of all Centre College students become community volunteers. The college encourages volunteer service with a community service day each year as part of the orientation for first-year students. - end - Communications Office Centre College 600 W.
