Help, I'm graduating!

Beyond Centre seminar series seeks to ease senior anxiety

RELEASED: Jan. 30, 2003

DANVILLE, KY—When diplomas were handed out, it would be nice if they came with a handbook for life that answered questions regarding money management, moving, insurance, landing a job, and what exactly a 401K is.

The Beyond Centre seminar series explains some of these complexities. The seminars are one-hour sessions in which students can learn tips and techniques for thriving outside of Centre.

Moving successfully to new cities and towns, budgeting, investment and reflecting on college experiences are just a few of the topics that will be covered.

According to David Eberhardt, assistant director of student life, even if students have a job lined up or a graduate school in mind, there are still anxieties about leaving the "campus culture" and making a transition into a new setting.

The five-part series begins Feb. 10 and will continue for the following five Mondays. Each session begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Nichols Dining Room in Cowan Dining Commons unless otherwise announced.

Students who attend will be eligible to win weekly door prizes, and anyone who attends all of the sessions will be entered to win a special grand prize.

Alumna Elizabeth Painter will lead the session on investment, and Eberhardt and Sarah Scott, also an assistant director of student life, will talk about anxiety in general and reflections on the Centre experience.

Eberhardt had his own fears when facing college graduation. "My anxieties were, 'What am I going to do with the rest of my life?'" he said. "But I got some really good advice to just worry about the next several years instead."
