DANVILLE, KY —The Centre College music program will sponsor a free evening of big band jazz featuring the CentreJazz Band on April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Combs Student Activities Center on campus.
This 17-piece big band will play works by Bob Mintzer, Frank Mantooth and Jeff Tyzik. Featured soloists include: Will Young, Vince Gerrish, Jessica Chisley, Nick Rouse and others.
Directed by famed trumpeter and Centre music professor Vince DiMartino, the CentreJazz Band is designed to teach students the skills to interpret music in the jazz idiom and further their performance skills for the future.
DiMartino comments, "This is the best jazz ensemble ever at Centre. They play with great enthusiasm, and we'll be playing quite a few new pieces from funk to swing."
CentreKlez, a newly established klezmer band at Centre, will perform several lively traditional Eastern European Jewish wedding and folk songs to round out the program.
