Centre highlighted in leading national publication

RELEASED: Feb. 13, 2003

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College was featured twice in the Feb. 14 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Language professor Ken Keffer's "Art of Walking" class was profiled in the Syllabus section of the weekly education publication. The course, which unites the worlds of nature and philosophy, took place during the CentreTerm, Jan. 6-27. Students in the course would meet in the morning to discuss readings from such philosophers as Kant, Schelling and Hegel and reconvene in the afternoons for a walk during which they discussed the ideas of beauty and art. "It was like we lived the philosophy we were reading," Centre freshman Charlie Boyd told the Chronicle.

In addition, the newspaper's Short Subjects section included Centre in an article called "Cupid's Campus Rendezvous." Tradition says that kissing on the brass seal in front of Old Centre at midnight will lead to marriage for the couple. The article also highlighted the tradition of Centre sweethearts climbing the tree on the lawn of Breckinridge Hall to be alone.

The Chronicle of Higher Education is published weekly and is distributed to more than 450,000 readers nationwide.
