DANVILLE, KY—A Centre College freshman-to-be may look familiar to Centre students before she even steps on campus.
Adair Howell of Atlanta is a finalist to appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan.
Howell, who will play on Centre's volleyball team in the fall, is one of four contestants remaining in the "Cosmo Cover Model Search." More than 5,000 models sent in entries.
The four finalists appeared in the July issue. A vote will then take place in which a fall 2003 Cosmo cover girl will be chosen.
A photo of Howell also appeared in the April edition of Cosmopolitan. She was one of 25 finalists and after making the initial cut, and was flown to New York for a cover shoot. She'll return to New York this fall for the unveiling party at Cosmopolitan.
Howell has also appeared in Seventeen magazine, on the television show Entertainment Tonight, and in a national advertisement for Chanel perfume.
But don't expect Howell to boast about her modeling; she'd rather talk about art or volleyball.
"She's very modest," said Stephanie Dragan, head volleyball coach at Centre. "She's multifaceted. She's sweet, athletic, humble and artistic. She wants to be a well-rounded person and Centre can help her with that. I believe she came to Centre for everything we have to offer her. She'll enhance our college community."
And Dragan is also certain she'll help Centre's volleyball fortunes. Howell was recruited by the University of Maryland, the University of Miami (Fla.) and the University of Mississippi before deciding on Centre.
"Adair is an extremely talented volleyball player," Dragan said. "She'll immediately make an impact on our team. She blocks well and can hit a variety of different balls. One thing I really like about Adair is that she's always smiling on the court. She plays well and she gives positive body language. What else could a coach want?"
