| Cross-country squad named a top NCAA academic team
Swimmer sets new school record, Rob King SCAC Player of the Week
RELEASED: Feb. 6, 2003
DANVILLE, KYThe Centre College women's cross-country team has been selected as one of the NCAA Cross-Country Academic All-American teams.
In order to receive this nomination, the team must have a GPA of 3.1 or better. The women's cross-country team consists of 10 runners: Lauren Arnold, Stephanie Beem, Abby Winterberg, Aubrey Durbin, Natalie Postel, Diane Thomas, Lisa Mudd, Emma Rankin, Kristie Kachler and Becky Schneider. These student-athletes had a team average GPA of 3.107.
Coach Lisa Owens was excited about the honor.
"We've only had one other team to do this well academically since I've been here. This shows what kind of work ethic these girls have both in cross country and the classroom. Centre is so tough academically that to have a cumulative GPA this high among 10 girls shows what a dedicated bunch they are."
In other sports news, Will Adams set a new school record in the1,000-freestyle with a time of 10:30.54 in a dual meet versus Berea College.
Adams is a freshman from Hopkinsville, Ky. The record had stood since 1996 and was held by former All-American Jon Oldham. Oldham's time was 10:31.84.
Head coach Dean Brownley said, "Will's a special swimmer in a special freshman class. He's more or less the leader, and I believe he'll set three or four records while he's here. Will's also ranked first in the conference for this event, and there are many fine swimmers in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference."
Rob King, (photo to the right), a 6-foot-6, 205-pound junior from duPont Manual High School in Louisville, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week in men's basketball for games played Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
King was the model for consistency this week for the Colonels. The forward had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots, and two steals in last week's 87-75 non-conference win over Thomas More. King followed that performance with another 16-point, eight-rebound night in Saturday's 83-71 road SCAC win at Sewanee.
