Centre welcomes new faculty

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College hired eight new faculty members for the 2003-04 academic year. According to Dean John C. Ward the new class of professors hired this year at Centre is a particularly strong one: “our searches, conducted on a national scale, invited top-flight applicants from all over the country. These new appointments were made from extremely competitive fields of candidates, so Centre was fortunate to recruit the very best. Centre College will be a better place as a result of their teaching and research activities.”

Robert Colter is assistant professor of philosophy. Colter holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Northwestern University, an M.A. in classics from the University of Colorado and a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Puget Sound. He was previously visiting assistant professor at Michigan State University.

Sarah Goodrum is assistant professor of sociology. She holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in sociology from Texas A&M University. She comes to Centre from the University of Kentucky, where she was a National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Behavioral Science.

James R. Leady is visiting assistant professor of economics. He is a Ph.D candidate and holds an M.A. in economics from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in economics from the United States Military Academy. He comes to Centre from the University of Michigan, where he was a graduate instructor.

Joseph D. Oldham is assistant professor of computer science. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science, a B.A. in English from the University of Kentucky. He was previously assistant professor of computer science at Georgetown College.

Julia C. Paulk is assistant professor of Spanish. She holds a dual Ph.D. in Spanish and comparative literature, a M.A. in comparative literature from Indiana University and a B.A. in Spanish from Middlebury College. She joins Centre from Indiana University, where she was an associate instructor of Spanish and Portuguese.

Abbey Poffenberger is visiting assistant professor of Spanish. She is completing a Ph.D. in Spanish American Literature, and holds an M.A. in Hispanic literature and a B.A. in Spanish and Latin American studies from the University of Kentucky.

Justin B. Houseknecht is visiting professor of chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Ohio State University and a B.S. in biochemistry from Grove City College. He comes to Centre from the University of Kentucky, where he was a postdoctoral scholar.

Ian W. Wilson is visiting instructor of German and humanities. He is completing a Ph.D. in comparative literature and holds an M.A. in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds a B.A. in comparative literature and German from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was previously a teaching fellow and graduate teaching consultant assistant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
