|Trustees have first meeting of academic year

DANVILLE, KYThe Centre College board of trustees held its fall meeting Friday, Oct, 17, on campus.
The trustees reviewed a strong year in student recruitment and approved named scholarships and appointments.
Centre ended the 2002-03 academic year with 1,409 freshman applications, a record number for the school. That yielded a strong freshman class with 286 new students.
Centre received gifts and grants totaling just more than $11 million in the past year. The following named scholarships were approved;
- The Thomas L. Hensley Scholarship, established by gifts in his memory from his friends. This scholarship will be awarded to full-time students at Centre who are from Eastern Kentucky and who have demonstrated financial need.
- The Lawrence F. Woboril Scholarship, established in his memory by a bequest from his wife. It will be awarded to worthy students who are English majors, with preference to those who intend to pursue a career in journalism.
- The Herbert W. McGuire Scholarship, established in his honor by gifts from his friends. It will be awarded to students who have financial need, have demonstrated academic ability, and are of good character.
- The Cambus-Kenneth Scholarship, established by a gift from Drs. Elizabeth Kennan and Michael Burns, in memory of Joe A. and Cecil Dulin Wallace. The scholarship will be awarded to full-time students of Centre.
The board approved emeritus status for faculty members Bob Brownlee, professor of economics, and Neil Eklund, professor of mathematics.
Jim Seabury attended his first meeting as a new board member. Joining him on the board's Class of 2009 are returning members Elizabeth Kennan, Crit Luallen, John Newman, James Ratcliffe and James Smith.
J. David Grissom of Louisville serves as chairman of the board. John Roush is president of the college.
The board meets again this January in Lousville.
