Coming home? New events, old favorites at Homecoming

DANVILLE, KY—The 2003 Centre College Homecoming is packed full of fun events for Oct. 17-18.
Homecoming events will kick off on Friday with a reception at the Chenault Alumni House from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Alumni are encouraged to stop by the AEGON Gallery at the Jones Visual Arts Center to visit an art exhibit featuring glass sculptures by Ché Rhodes '95. The exhibit will be open both days.

The Homecoming Gala featuring legendary group The Four Tops takes place Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Newlin Hall in Centre's Norton Center for the Arts.

The annual Homecoming 5K begins at 8 a.m. at Young Hall Saturday.

At 9:15 that morning, the Nichols House dedication takes place at 141 N. Fifth Street.

Everyone is invited to attend the Alumni Recognition Ceremony on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Newlin Hall.

This year's honorees include: Distinguished Alumnus Award recipients, Stephen Powell '74, Tom Thurman '84 and W.M. Dirk van Allen '58; Young Alumnus Award recipient, Brook Forrest White, Jr. '91; and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, Coby DeVary '86, Powell B. Gillenwater '55 (posthumous), Terri Smith Mayhew '85 and Herbert W. McGuire '57.

Following the ceremony, CentreFest I, a family-style picnic, will begin at noon on the lawn of the Cowan Dining Commons. Danville-based band, BILLYBLUES, will provide entertainment.
Prior to the football team kicking off against Maryville at 2:30 p.m., the men's soccer team hosts Sewanee at 1 p.m. Greek open houses are from noon to 2 p.m.

The Homecoming king and queen will be announced at halftime of the football game. After the game, class reunions will be held at various locations from 5-7 p.m.

To conclude the evening, Centre adds a new event in addition to the dinner/dance and the Danville Country Club. From 9 p.m. until midnight alumni and current students can enjoy CentreFest II on Walnut Street. Cast Iron Filter will provide music.

Centre has a new face on the alumni affairs staff this year. Jacky Thomas '02 is associate director of alumni affairs. Thomas succeeds Jamey Elliott '96, who is now the director of annual giving. Thomas' duties include planning Homecoming and alumni events. She also serves as the chief staff member for the Alumni Association Board of Directors. She was previously the associate director of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association.

"I'm really excited to return to Centre as a member of the alumni and development staff," Thomas said. "Being an alumna of Centre is something in which I take great pride, and I'm excited to work with other alums who share my passion for Centre. I had so many incredible experiences and opportunities here, and I'm eager to give back to the College in a professional capacity."
