| Korean glass artist explores nature in new exhibit
RELEASED: Feb. 6, 2003
DANVILLE, KYThe Centre College Art Program will host a glass sculpture exhibit titled "The Line in Space" by artist Hyewook Huh.
Huh's works will be displayed in the AEGON Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center. The exhibit is open through Feb. 21. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An opening reception for the artist was held on Feb. 7 in the AEGON Gallery.
Born in 1971, in Seoul, South Korea, Huh earned a BFA degree in ceramics at Kook-Min University in Seoul in 1994. After graduating, Huh maintained a glass studio and became involved in workshops, conferences and exhibitions with other Korean glass artists until 1999. She received her MFA degree in glass at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in 2002.
Huh currently lives in Danville, where she works as a graduate assistant in Studio Art for the Centre College Art Program.
Huh comments, "My work is directly related to exploring a different way of understanding nature. My concept of nature is pretty much about a man-made kind of nature, which can't be described as organic or wild. It's the nature that is organized and designed in composition for environment, similar to the art of landscape."
Huh often uses natural objects (grass, turf and water) to give her pieces vitality and to represent natural cycles of living, growing and dying.
Huh says, "As I continually use natural elements to create work, I'm consumed with the issue of taking care of them. Not only are their life and death dependent upon me, but also their existence, transformation and termination."
