Can I get a witness? Mock Trial team takes on top competitors

RELEASED: Feb. 27, 2003

DANVILLE, KY—In athletics, Centre typically competes against schools of comparable size. Mock Trial tournaments, on the other hand, have Centre up against an entirely different set of opponents.

In its first regional tournament and final tournament of the year, the eight-member team faced Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State University and University of Eastern Michigan at Notre Dame Feb. 22-23.

Out of that group, Centre tied Ohio State and defeated Eastern Michigan.

The two schools have an undergraduate enrollment of 35,749 and 18,660, respectively, as compared to Centre's 1,070.

"It's actually refreshing to compete against these schools," said senior Susan Courtwright, who was given an Outstanding Attorney award at the competition. "When you can go into the courtroom and hold your own against schools like Notre Dame and Michigan, you know you're getting as good an education, if not better."

The Mock Trial team was founded three years ago, and Courtwright gives W. David Hall, assistant professor of religion at Centre, and local attorney Patrick McClure credit for the support the team needed to be a force at competitions.

"The team has really taken off this year," Courtwright said. "I want this to be something that's still here in 40 years. I want to come back and hear the Mock Trial team is doing great."

The seven other students who attended the tournament were freshmen Jenny Anderson, Sam Ruth and John Carrithers; and sophomores Ivana Babic, Diana Freeman, Marion Maybank and Bobby Murray.
