Centre welcomes impressive freshman class

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College welcomed the Class of 2007 for new student orientation on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Faculty, staff and upperclassmen at Centre greeted 288 new students to campus.

Carey Thompson, dean of admission and student financial planning, described the class as "a truly excellent one."

The new class has an average ACT composite score of 27.3, which is well above the state (20.2) and national (20.8) averages. Fifty percent graduated in the top-10 percent of their high school graduating classes, with 25 valedictorians and salutatorians. The new class also includes 51 Kentucky Governor's Scholars.

Twenty-seven states and three foreign countries are represented. Sixty-one percent are from Kentucky, with Tennessee and Ohio the next best represented.

The class is 53 percent male and 47 percent female.

Orientation, which runs Sept. 3-7, includes a variety of academic and social activities to help the new students make a successful transition to Centre.

The new students arrive to campus with a pledge made to them from the school called The Centre Commitment: All students who meet the College's academic and social expectations are guaranteed an internship, study abroad, and graduation in four concurrent years, or the College will provide up to a year of additional study tuition free. Centre College is ranked as a top-50 national liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report, giving it the highest national ranking of any Kentucky college or university.
