| Glass artist returns to alma mater to showcase work
RELEASED: Oct. 2, 2003
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A free public reception for the artist will be held on Oct. 17 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the AEGON Gallery. Rhodes studied glass at Centre with Stephen Powell, professor of art and internationally known glass artist. Rhodes earned a bachelor of arts degree from Centre in 1995. Powell comments, "Che was one of the students that comes along in your teaching career that makes you know you chose the right profession. Before graduating, Che was more of a peer that a student. He has gone on to run the glass program at Southern Illinois University, serve on the Glass Art Society Board of Directors, and exhibit his glass sculpture nationally. I couldn't be more proud of a student from our program." After Centre, Rhodes went on to study with Jon F. Clark at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. He's been represented by the Marta Hewett Gallery (Cincinnati/Louisville, Ky.) as well as the Blue Spiral One Gallery in Asheville, N.C. In 1998 and1999, he was employed as an instructor at the Tyler School of Art and Hot Soup Studios in Philadelphia. Rhodes is currently head of the glass department at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Of his exhibit, Rhodes says, "Most of my recent work is an investigation of glass as a substance. I work almost exclusively with clear, colorless glass, as I'm interested in its psychological implications. Clear glass is pure and exists only as what it really is, only as form. It reveals itself entirely. Therefore, it affords the opportunity to present ideas through true form rather than convoluted images or illusion."
