Shapland named Volunteer of the Month

RELEASED: April 10, 2003

DANVILLE, KY —Heather Shapland, a junior from Louisville, has been named Centre's Volunteer of the Month for her work with Learning is Fun Together (LIFT).

Fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Danville area are invited to enroll in the LIFT program, where they participate in educational enrichment activities with Centre student volunteers.

"The college volunteers serve as positive role models that the students look up to," Shapland said. "Although it's just an hour-and-a-half out of your life, it has a huge impact on the students and their attitudes toward learning."

Trina McFarland, director of volunteer services, said that in past years, five or six students from the education department have worked together to plan and organize the LIFT program. This year Shapland led the effort.

"She recruited volunteers and planned the activities for the children," McFarland said. "Heather definitely likes to see things done well."

The volunteer award program at Centre recognizes some of the many students who provide service to the local community. Each year, around 60 percent of all Centre College students become community volunteers. The college encourages volunteer service with a community service day each year as part of the orientation for first-year students.
