| Scholars give program high marks
RELEASED: July 10, 2003
From their responses, GSP students may be reluctant to pack their bags and leave later this month as they are having a blast in the program, which concludes on July 26. Scholars have diversified interests, picking a variety of favorite places on Centre's campus: grassy areas, trees, campus benches, the Sutcliffe fitness/recreation center, Cowan dining hall and just "the outdoors." But as Dorothy says in the Wizard of Oz, "There's no place like home." Fifty-one percent of GSP students chose their homes and their friends' homes at Centre as their favorite places. Students are living in Centre residence halls Yerkes, Acheson, Caldwell, Nevin, Ganfield, Evans and Cheek this summer. Lauren Omer said she enjoyed hanging out in her third-floor Cheek hallway where the girls recently had a birthday party.
"I play racquetball and tennis and I coach the (girls') powderpuff football team," Brian Rogers said. Some students had preconceived notions of what the program would be like. GSP students at Centre said they were surprised with enjoyable classes, new friends, good food, an aesthetically pleasing campus and lots of activities. Forty-five percent of scholars were most surprised, however, by the amount of free time and freedom they could enjoy, nearly 25 percent noted how nice people at GSP have been, including other scholars, faculty and staff. "I was surprised at how down to earth people are," Scott McIntosh said. - end - For news archives go to http://www.centre.edu/web/news/newsarchive.html. Communications Office Centre College 600 W.
