| The joy of music: students pick top songs
RELEASED: June 19, 2003
While VH1 gave a nod to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as the best song, Centre students had their own ideas. Liberty, Ky., senior Amy Barlow picked the song "Run" by Kutless as her favorite. "It allows me to reflect on the past and see all the hope there is for the future," she said. Other students chose songs that spark memories of their hometowns, friends and experiences.
Senior Roseann Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn., said she liked, "Seize the Day" from the movie, "The Newsies" because it reminded her of the musical. Kafui Asembri, a junior from Accra, Ghana, went with the late Aliyah's "Try Again" because "it has a positive message." Louisville senior James Trombetti said "Martyr" by Rusted Root was "the best blend of vocals and instruments I've ever heard." And May graduate Rachel Jones picked an oldie but a goody in Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me." The Georgetown, Ky., native said, "It reminds me of party nights." Most students picked songs not chosen by VH1, however, sophomore Bana Mehrbakhsh from Hazard, Ky., agreed with one of VH1's picks. She chose "Good Riddance" by Green Day. VH1 ranked the song No. 78. From pop to Christian, R&B, rap, alternative and country, students at Centre enjoy a wide variety of music. Other artists Centre students mentioned were John Mayer, Nickelback, Eve, Kid Rock, Incubus, Indigo Girls, Kenny Chesney, The Allman Brothers, Ben Folds Five, Sheryl Crow and India Arie.
