Great American Brass Band Festival returns for 15th year

RELEASED: June 3, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—The Great American Brass Band Festival returns to Centre College's campus June 11-13 with 17 bands set to perform. Featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune and Southern Living, the festival is known as "America's greatest band concert in the park."

It brings top international brass bands to Centre's campus for three days of free public concerts and related events. The festival consistently draws more than 40,000 fans each year from around the world.

Highlights include two military bands, the return of ragtime pianist Scott Kirby, and the Circle City Sidewalk Stompers, a popular clown band from Indianapolis. Several local bands will also perform.

The Olympia Brass Band will be the closing act at Saturday night's picnic. They are New Orleans' best-known jazz band and have performed at every Great American Brass Band Festival.

An exciting new feature this year will be the Battle of the Civil War Bands to take place Sunday night after the last band performs. The Saxtons Cornet Band will do musical battle with the Federal City Brass Band on the front porch of Old Centre.

George Foreman, managing director of Centre's Norton Center for the Arts and associate professor of humanities, founded the festival.
