| Cherry named Volunteer of the Month
RELEASED: May 20, 2004
Cherry organized campus volunteers for Repair Affair, a program sponsored by C.A.R.E. (Centre Action Reaches Everyone) that assists area residents by making home repairs. Repair Affair is a joint effort between volunteers from the community and the college. More than 100 Centre students participated in the event. "We're always worried that we're not going to have enough [volunteers], but this year Centre students and Greek organizations signed up a lot of people, so we had more than enough," Cherry says. Cherry is the philanthropy chair for Phi Kappa Tau, the fraternity that won this year's Greek service award for its contribution of more than 700 hours to community service. Cherry is also an officer in C.A.R.E. "Davis is someone to count on," says Trina McFarland, director of service and leadership development at Centre. "If C.A.R.E. has a meeting or a project, there's no question about whether or not Davis will be there. He will, and he'll give 110 percent."
The volunteer award program at Centre recognizes some of the many students who provide service to the local community. Each year, around 60 percent of all Centre students become community volunteers. The College encourages volunteer service with a community-service day each year as part of the orientation for first-year Centre students.
