| Centre adds financial economics major
RELEASED: Jan. 8, 2004
In keeping with Centre's traditional liberal arts education, the new major combines fundamental economic theory with specialized financial knowledge. The financial economics major will include more economics and mathematics than typical finance programs, which will have Centre graduates better prepared for top-20 M.B.A. programs and the work force. Bob Martin, Boles Professor of Economics at Centre, said the program is similar to what many Ivy League schools offer to prepare their students for careers in business and finance. "The program is designed to do two things: First, give each student who majors in financial economics marketable skills, and second prepare them for the top-20 M.B.A. programs or graduate schools in finance," he said. "These two objectives are complementary since the top M.B.A. programs prefer students who have worked several years in a professional position before they enter the M.B.A. program. Our program makes intensive use of written/verbal communication, mathematics, computing and analytical methods. These skill sets are highly valued by employers." Prospective students and their parents have already inquired about the major, which is one of Centre's 26 majors and 25 minors. Many students choose to earn two majors during their four years at the College; self-designed majors are also available.
