| Centre receives high marks in best-selling college guide
RELEASED: July 8, 2004
The Fiske Guide also touts Centre's strong student-faculty relationships, as well as its curriculum, study-abroad opportunities, alumni success and extracurricular activities. Ninety-seven percent of Centre faculty members hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and are noted for working closely with Centre students. The average class size is 18 students and hardly any classes exceed 30. "Virtually every class is taught by a full professor, and usually a well-experienced and accomplished one at that," says a Centre junior in the book. (No classes at Centre are taught by teaching assistants.) The guidebook noted Centre's Art and Drama programs as being particularly strong. It also highlights CentreTerm, the College's distinctive three-week January session, which offers students a chance to explore unusual and interdisciplinary topics, such as cloning, leadership, the life and music of Duke Ellington, and baseball in American politics. Also praised was the College's nationally ranked study abroad program, which offers travels to England, France, Mexico, Japan and Ireland during the semester, and to Vietnam, Cameroon, Turkey and the Bahamas during CentreTerm.
The Fiske Guide also explains that The College Centre, a renovation and expansion of the library and athletic facilities, will add more social opportunities. The $22-million project is to be completed in the fall of 2005. Centre is the only private Kentucky institution reviewed by the Fiske Guide. Other schools featured are Amherst, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Yale.
