Senior profile: Elizabeth Hurst

RELEASED: Sept. 9, 2004

Name: Elizabeth Hurst

Soccer position: Outside mid-fielder

How do you think the women’s soccer team will fare this year?
“I’m really excited about what Head Coach Jay Hoffman is doing with the team. We’re putting in a new system of play, and so far all of the players on the team have had a great attitude. I think we’ll have a successful season because of our efforts.”

You had to sit out part of last season. What happened?
“We were coming home after a couple of games last year and my leg started to swell. As it turns out, I had a staphylococcus infection in my left leg and had to have emergency surgery. That was the end of my soccer season and I was out of school for four weeks, but it could have been worse.”

What was it like to come back this season?
“It was daunting to see how much skill level I’d lost not being able to run for several months, but I knew if I didn’t play my senior year, I’d miss out on being with my friends and the team. It was worth the challenge to come back and train.”

Future plans: “I plan to go to law school eventually, but I might do AmeriCorps for a year or apply for a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.”

Quotable: “As an international studies major, Centre has provided me with the educational foundation in the classroom to succeed after I graduate. More recently though, Centre has allowed me to apply that knowledge during my tremendous experience while studying in Strasbourg, France. Also, being a college athlete at Centre has forced me to grow personally and provided me with friendships that will last long after I graduate.”

What others say about Liz: “My transition to Centre as the head coach has been made easier because of players like Liz,” Hoffman says. “She has an excellent attitude and never has to be reminded about playing hard. More importantly, Liz is a type of player that others try to be like. She’s honest, works hard and makes the best out of difficult situations. If there were one player at this point who needs to be rewarded for her hard efforts and positive attitude, it would be Liz. I look forward to watching her continue her success throughout her senior year.”
