Students praise Centre Internship Plus

RELEASED: Nov. 24, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Centre's new Internship Plus program is a hit with students. Available during CentreTerm or the summer, Internship Plus provides a way for students to earn extra financial support for high-quality internship experiences.

Mindy Wilson, internship and outreach coordinator, explains the benefits of the program.

"Some students think that they can't take a great internship away from home because they can't afford it," she says. "The funding that a student can receive from Internship Plus often assists with housing and living expenses or helps a student make the decision between taking a paying job at home that's not really career oriented and really going after that great career experience."

Tony Stefater, a junior from Louisville, Ky., has designed two internships—one at Stanford University and the other at Johns Hopkins University.

"I designed both these internships myself by contacting professors at the universities," Stefater says. "Most professors are excited about the possibility of educating and enlightening undergraduate students, but many don't have the extra resources to make it possible for you to accept the position. Because of Internship Plus, I was able to enjoy both opportunities."

Stefater plans to pursue a Ph.D., and perform research at a major research institution.

Cara Quilligan, a senior from Danville, was equally pleased with the internship she learned about on the Career Services section of the Centre Web site.

"It was amazing and very educational," she says. "Although I've decided to go a different direction with my graduate education, that time helped me to discover what kind of job I didn't want to have."

The extra financial support from Internship Plus made the opportunity more realistic, she adds.
