Freshman class gets a personal welcome

RELEASED: Sept. 2, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Dozens of Centre College faculty, staff and upperclassmen donned navy "Orientation Crew" shirts and greeted the Class of 2008 and their families on Wednesday.

Keeping with Centre tradition, orientation volunteers unloaded hundreds of tightly packed vehicles—each within minutes. The new students got a sample of the personal attention Centre offers, as their future professors, staff members, classmates and friends helped them carry boxes, clothes, books, appliances and other items into the residence halls.

"Our faculty, staff and students take real pleasure in helping these young men and women move into their residence halls," says Centre President John Roush, who helped students move into Yerkes Hall. "This is a great Centre tradition. We have a remarkable class of young people arriving today and we're really excited to have them here."

For many parents and students who were worried about moving in, these helping hands came as a great and appreciated surprise.

"The move-in went a lot better than I ever expected," says freshman Bess Rives from Louisville, Ky. "I thought we'd be moving in forever, but we've already unloaded the whole car and we just got here five minutes ago."

Rives and her father, Brad Rives, had moved her older brothers into college residence halls elsewhere and were pleased at the Centre difference.

"The orientation crew made it a breeze," Brad Rives says. "This was easier than moving her brothers. I'm really happy Bess came here."

Freshman Orientation takes place this week. Centre's Opening Convocation will be held Sunday, Sept. 5 and classes begin Monday, Sept. 6.
