Senior profile: Track standout Ryan New

RELEASED: April 22, 2004

Name: Ryan New

Hometown: Somerset, Ky.

Double major: Classical studies and history

Study Abroad: Italy (CentreTerm 2003)

Extracurricular activities: Member of Who's Who Among American Students in Universities and Colleges, a four-year member of the track team and the team captain, and a resident assistant for three years.

You're a member of the dean's list. How do you manage to perform well in the classroom with the rigors of competing in athletics? "Well, it's tough. It isn't easy trying to perform well at homework after you spent the last three hours tormenting your body. But even though it's tiresome, I think running and working out gives me a needed structure for my day."

How do you feel about the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet in Atlanta? (New has the leading SCAC times this season in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and has a chance to win all three in Atlanta) "I feel so pumped it's hard to describe. Everything is set: a good track, my last meet ever—unless I make a national qualifying time, the drama of conference competition, not to mention three days of spending time with my Centre family. I'm confident that we'll be bringing home a men's conference title.

What others say about Ryan: "In my seven years coaching track, Ryan is the athlete who has loved the sport the most. He's got a shot at winning five events this weekend, and that's just unheard of." —Lisa Owens, track and field coach

"Ryan is a workhorse. He's the hardest working, most determined and focused runner I've ever seen. Ryan never settles for less than his best."—Jeremy Smith, assistant track and field coach

Future plans: Attending the University of Kentucky to obtain a master's in classical studies. New says he will then decide between pursuing a Ph.D. in classical studies at the University of Cincinnati or attending law school at the University of Kentucky. "If I pursue my Ph.D. in classical studies, I'd like to come back to teach at Centre someday."

Quotable: "The education at Centre is wonderful. Many of the professors are great and have changed my life."
