College welcomes outstanding freshman class

RELEASED: August 26, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Centre’s Class of 2008 arrives at the College on Sept. 1. The 301 freshmen make up an impressive class.

Carey Thompson, dean of admission and student financial planning, says the Class of 2008 is “an exceptional one.”

“This is one of the strongest incoming classes we’ve ever had at Centre,” he observes.

The new class has a mid-range ACT score of 25 to 30, which is well above national averages. It’s the highest entering student test-score range of any Kentucky institution. The class mid-range SAT score is 1200 to 1350. The average GPA for the class is 3.8. Sixty-one percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes. Sixty-seven of the students were Kentucky Governor’s Scholars—the largest number of GSP students ever in a Centre class.

Twenty-three states and two foreign countries are represented.

The class is 54 percent female and 46 percent male.

New-student orientation takes place Sept. 1-3. It will include a variety of academic and social activities to help the new students make a successful transition to Centre. The College will also hold a freshman volunteer cleanup at various locations in the area on Sept. 4. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 6.

The freshmen arrive to campus with a pledge made to them from the school called The Centre Commitment. Under this unique pledge, all students who meet the College’s academic and social expectations are guaranteed an internship, study abroad, and graduation in four concurrent years, or the College will provide up to a year of additional study tuition-free.
