The Numbers Game

DANVILLE, KY—Can you put a number on a Centre College education? As it turns out, you can apply several numbers to it. The figures are in.

1 Centre's national ranking among Kentucky's educational institutions

1 Centre's spot in national alumni-giving percentage

2 U.S. vice presidents among Centre alumni (John Cabell Breckinridge, Class of 1838, and Adlai E. Stevenson, Class of 1859). Also the number of Supreme Court justices among Centre's alumni (John Marshall Harlan, Class of 1850, and Chief Justice Fred Vinson, Class of 1909).

2000 The year Centre hosted the U.S. vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and Joseph Lieberman

1 Centre alumnus/staff member who has appeared in movies and TV shows with Bruce Willis, Madonna, Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. David Dewitt '83 was an actor in Hollywood before joining his alma mater as associate director of admission.

22 The number of Centre students who have won Fulbright scholarships in the past decade

100 Percent of 2004 Centre graduates who applied for medical school and were accepted

96 The percentage of Centre alumni who are employed or engaged in advanced study nine months after graduation

75 The percentage of Centre students who study abroad during their time at the College

21, 12 and 2 Centre's football record (wins, losses and ties) against the University of Kentucky

97The percentage of faculty who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree

1819 The year Centre was founded

2005 The year The College Centre will be completed. The project is a $22-million renovation and expansion of Crounse Academic Center and Sutcliffe Athletic/Recreation Center.

Part of the famous formula C6-H0 signifying Centre's football victory over No. 1-ranked Harvard in 1921. The game has been described as the greatest upset of the 20th century.
