New York Times article features Supreme Court
justice's visit to Centre

RELEASED: May 13, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's upcoming visit to Centre was the focus of a May 9 New York Times article. O'Connor will give the commencement address at Centre on May 23.

Big-name speakers such as O'Connor are hard to come by for colleges, according to the article. But thanks to personal connections O'Connor has with Centre alumni, she agreed to a return visit to campus. O'Connor also visited Centre in 1987.

Centre president John Roush told the Times reporter that Centre's loyal and caring alumni often made the unexpected happen at Centre.

Several other newspapers have reported on O'Connor's upcoming address. Her visit was also noted in a national Associated Press story and on C-SPAN's Washington Journal news program.

Centre is no stranger to well-known commencement speakers. Past speakers have included former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and his wife, U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, actress Lynn Redgrave, Pulitzer-winning poet Maxine Kumin, and famed sports broadcaster Cawood Ledford, a 1949 Centre graduate.
