Eight Centre employees receive awards

DANVILLE, KY—Eight employees of Centre College received service awards during the school's annual employee appreciation dinner Thursday, May 20. They are Marsha Crowe, Lisa Owens, Stacie Yates, Brenda Gorley, Shirley Owsley, Travis Key, Ankica Karapandzic, and Stan Campbell.

In addition, the college recognized outstanding teachers, retiring employees and individuals who have reached milestones of service to the college, ranging from five to 35 years.

Karapandzic, Owsley and Key received the Horky Service Award. This award was established to recognize facilities management employees for outstanding achievement. It's given in honor of the late John Horky, a Centre alumnus, who worked closely with the department.

Karapandzic, who joined Centre's staff in 2002, and Owsley, who joined the staff in 1977, are custodians. Key, who came to Centre in 2002, works with the grounds department.

Crowe, Owens, Yates and Gorley received Centre Recognition Awards, which salute persons who have unselfishly served the college community.

Crowe has been the secretary in the academic dean's office since 2001. Owens came to Centre in 1998 and coaches the Centre College men's and women's track and cross country teams. Yates, a database technologist for information technology services, started working at Centre in 1999. Gorley is an application processor for Centre's admission office. She has been at Centre since 1988.

Campbell, director of the library services at Centre, received the Presidential Award. This award was created to recognize exceptional leadership and accomplishment for an individual at the college. Campbell has been at Centre since 1977.

Kirk Awards for excellence in teaching went to Helen Emmitt, associate professor of English; Tony Haigh, professor of dramatic arts; Peggy Richey, associate professor of biology and biochemistry; Beau Weston, associate professor of sociology; John Wilson, professor of mathematics; and Clarence Wyatt, Pottinger Associate Professor of History.

The Kirk Award was endowed by a gift from a member of the board of trustees in 1995. The endowment has recognized excellent teachers at Centre since 1996.

Retirees recognized were professors Bob Brownlee and Neil Eklund and staff members Willie Pryor, Jerry Hart, Jackie Lewis, Mary Hreha, and Tom McKune.

Persons reaching milestones were: 35 years—Marcha Graves and Milton Scarborough; 30 years—Karen Ciholas and Neil Eklund; 25 years—Mike Barton, Donna Campbell, Edle Casey, Mark deAraujo, Martha Graves, Ken Keffer, and Mona Wyatt; 20 years—Connie Klimke and Dorthy Penman; 15 years—Brian Chafin, Gary Crase, Andy Frye, Norman Jenkins, Randy Maddox, Mark Rasmussen, Peggy Richey, Christine Shannon, Vickie Walker, and Ricky Wesley; 10 years—Mark Anderson, Jeb Burch, Stephanie Dew, Kathy Fallon, Jeff Hicks, Brad Hundley, Sherry Martin, Jennifer Muzyka, and Richard Trollinger; 5 years—Mary Ballard, Rick Fox, Carrie Frey, Jamey Gay, Lori Hartman-Mahmud, Bill Holtzclaw, Shayne Jarman, Deb Jones, Alex McAllister, Karen Sherwood, Morris Stewart, Matt Vonderbrink, Philip White, and Stacie Yates.
