Centre makes its mark at theater conference

RELEASED: Mar. 11, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College was well represented at last weekend's Southeastern Theatre Conference, the largest theater gathering in the United States.

A record 29 Centre students along with two faculty members and two staff members attended the event held March 3-7 in Chattanooga, Tenn. More than 4,500 people—the largest crowd ever for SETC—attended the conference, which featured a variety of workshops, theater festivals, guest speakers and competitions.

"You meet so many people and make great contacts," says Sara Watson, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., who plans to major in dramatic arts. It was Watson's second visit to the conference. She landed a summer internship after attending last year's SETC. "Centre is really respected at the conference," she says.

"Centre students are widely known and liked by the professional theater companies and by graduate schools," says Tony Haigh, professor of dramatic arts at Centre. Haigh served as president-elect this past year for the SETC and planned the 55th annual festival. Haigh, who started his year-long stint as president of the SETC last weekend, began taking Centre students to the conference 10 years ago.
One of the workshops this year was "Presenting Issue-Oriented Theatre in High School" and was led by Joan Haigh, Jane Dewey and Jeff Meyer, all of Danville.

The workshop's subject matter focused on "The Laramie Project," which was performed at Danville High School and also at Centre College last year.

Haigh and Matthew Hallock, assistant professor of drama at Centre, served as workshop presenters.
"It reinforced that we're really lucky to have the [dramatic arts] program we do at Centre," says Katie Stubblefield, a dramatic arts senior from San Antonio.

The following Centre students took part in SETC: Emily Anderson, Erin McGuire, Mindy Wolff, Julia Leist, Karen Biscopink, Strother Gaines, Adam Brown, Josh Davis, Chad Dike, Jared Graham, Dan Kamykowski, Colin McCann, Adam Watson, Lisa Brown, Jessica Coates, Beth Fischer, Kate Pieratt, Sara Watson, David Flora, Ian Frank, Joe Mitchell, Leigh Brown, Katie Stubblefield, Rachel White, Elizabeth Cornell, Danielle Knight-Andrus, Lisa Parsons, Carrie Robison and Megan Breier.
