| Centre student wins Fulbright
RELEASED: May 27, 2004
The recent Centre graduate will be teaching English to French-speaking students at a school on Martinique island in the Caribbean. She will begin her work in the fall. Smith, a Louisville, Ky., native who received an international studies degree from Centre on May 23, studied abroad for a semester in Strasbourg, France, in 2002 as part of Centre's international program. She was a member of Centre Singers, Delta Omicron (music fraternity), and the Student Activities Council during her time at Centre. Stephanie Dew, associate professor of biology, serves as Centre's Fulbright advisor. Smith also credited Cowan Professor of English Milton Reigelman for his help. The University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies and the Brussels School of International Studies in Belgium have accepted Smith for their master's programs. She has deferred graduate school for a year while she takes part in the Fulbright program. She plans to go into foreign public service, possibly working for a non-governmental organization, when she completes her education. Smith extends a Centre tradition that has produced 25 Fulbright winners since 1991. The college has also produced a Rhodes Scholar as well as Truman and Goldwater scholarship winners in that span. Fulbright Fellows receive full grants, travel grants, and/or teaching assistantships that allow them to pursue one academic year of self-designed study and/or research in a foreign country. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. Fulbright alumni include Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners, governors and senators, ambassadors and artists, prime ministers and heads of state, professors and scientists, Supreme Court Justices and CEOs.
