| Exhibit explores "Structure and State of Mind"
RELEASED: Sept. 30, 2004
Ellis' works will be displayed Oct. 1-29 in the AEGON Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A public reception for the artist will be held Oct. 22, 4-5 p.m. in the gallery. Ellis will present a public slide lecture on her work on Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. in the Jones Visual Arts Center, room 201. Structure and State of Mind will feature a series of architectural works and a portrait series. Judith Pointer Jia, assistant professor of art at Centre, says, "This is an appealing exhibit of life-size portraits as well as paintings that could be classified as interiors. The portraits quietly capture individuals sitting in contemplation. With the interiors though, Ms. Ellis presents us with the interesting compositions made by the lumber frame of a house under construction. The viewpoint is from within the house, and the brilliant colors of the sky flood the area between the boards." Ellis says that her "New Construction" series depicts "individual energetic patterns" that are an "analogous equivalent to the human figure." "Geometric forms of wood-frame home construction are combined with atmospheric patterns of weather to reference body-language and psychological states," she says. An assistant professor of painting at the department of art and art history at SUNY Cortland, Ellis earned a master of fine arts degree from Louisiana State University and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Michigan. Her visual arts career includes 10 years of professional experience in design and art direction, as well as fine arts experience in many media. Ellis has exhibited her paintings nationally since 1985.
