Undefeated freshman diver to compete in NCAA Championships

RELEASED: Mar. 11, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College diver Dustin Schulten, a freshman from Louisville, has qualified to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships, March 18-20, at Principia College in St. Louis.

Schulten won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in both the one- and three-meter diving competitions. Schulten went undefeated this season and is a first-team all-conference performer. He's one of 24 divers who qualified for the national meet.

"I'm in a great position for a freshman," Schulten says. "I didn't expect to qualify. But I feel confident about moving up [in the seedings] throughout the meet."

Schulten was a diver for St. Xavier High School, which has an outstanding program. He says that Centre, thanks to extra practice time, has allowed him to sharpen his skills.

"Dustin is extremely deserving of this honor," says head coach Dean Brownley. "Although he's gone through the season undefeated, his work ethic hasn't dropped one bit. He's a good person on top of being a good diver. Centre is lucky to have a diver of this caliber, and we're glad he'll be back for three more years."

Schulten is happy with his Centre experience.

"Centre College has been great," he says. "I'm having a great time. I've met a lot of people and gained a lot of friendships. It's been different being away from home and my family but I like my new home and new family as well."
