Track and field teams shine

RELEASED: April 29, 2004

DANVILLE, KY—Centre's track and field teams fared well at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Festival last week in Atlanta.

The men's team barely missed capturing the conference championship. The Colonels lost to DePauw by just one point.

Senior standout Ryan New was named the MVP of the meet. He won the 400-meter dash and was part of Centre's winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams. New finished second in the 200- and third in the 100-meter dash.

New, who plans to compete in a few more meets to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in late May, was also named the 2004 SCAC men's track and field Athlete-of-the-Year.

Centre senior Sean Smith also had a big meet by winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Sophomore Chad Loveless placed first in the javelin and the 400-meter hurdles.

"They put it all on the line and gave me everything they had, and you can't be disappointed with that," Centre coach Lisa Owens said.

The women's team placed fourth in Atlanta. Freshman Eileen Schilling was outstanding. She broke the conference record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:56. Schilling also won the 5,000 with a time of 18:29.

Schilling is slated to run in the NCAA Division III Championships May 27-29 in Chicago.
