Senior interns at U.S. Department of Labor
RELEASED: Sept. 16, 2004
DANVILLE, KYNora Traum, a senior double major in French and economics at Centre, spent her summer in D.C., as an intern for the U.S. Department of Labor.
She worked in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an agency that analyses labor economics for the federal government. Traum discovered and landed the internship with help from Centres Career Services office.
I helped create a database, updated part of the BLS main Web site and wrote a guidebook for certain BLS employees working with outside researchers, says Traum, who is from Kuttawa, Ky. The internship also allowed me to participate in lectures from various government officials and tour national sites such as the Capitol and Pentagon. I learned a lot about how the government works and the methods involved in collecting information for statistical purposes.
This internship will help Traum when she applies to graduate school, where she plans to study either economics or public policy.
Centre has another connection to the U.S. Department of Labor: Elaine Chao, Secretary of Labor, spoke at the Colleges commencement two years ago with her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
During her internship, Traum managed to break away from work and have some fun in the nations capital.
I absolutely loved D.C.! she says. Between concerts, free museums, monuments, and everything else going on, there were lots of interesting sights and activities to keep me busy. Walking around Georgetown was probably my favorite. I really liked the restaurants, shops and architecture. Meeting other interns from so many different colleges was a lot of fun, too.
