Admission receives record number of deposits

RELEASED: May 19, 2005

DANVILLE, KY—The Centre College class of 2009 will be a large, diverse and high-achieving group of students, according to information recently released by the Office of Admission.

As of this writing, 331 students have paid deposit fees for fall enrollment. This is an all-time record high. Allowing for typical "summer melt" (the tendency of some students to forfeit their deposits over the summer, for whatever reason), all indications point to the incoming freshman class meeting or exceeding the optimal number of 310 students.

J. Carey Thompson, dean of admission and student financial planning, also noted the College's ability to be increasingly selective. "Our enviable acceptance rate of 63 percent comes on the heels of an extraordinary year with a 25 percent increase in applications fueled in large part by a significant increase in out of state applicants," said Thompson, who went on to present other significant data trends among those who have committed to Centre for the coming year:

  • 26 percent yield rate (percentage of admitted students who have made deposits)
  • 45 percent male
  • 37 percent from out of state
  • 8.8 percent minority and international
  • 56 percent in the top 10 percent of their high school class
  • 27.47 average ACT score

Popular intended majors for the incoming freshmen include: biology, economics, psychology, English, government, education, history and chemistry, says Thompson, who also notes that 43 percent indicate that they are undecided about a major.
