RELEASED: July 14, 2005

DANVILLE, KY—Congressman Ben Chandler and Centre College have announced a partnership to provide internship opportunities for Centre students in the congressman’s Washington D.C. office. Senior Nikki Smith, a history and government double major from Owensboro, Ky., will be the first intern in Chandler’s office.

At least one internship position will be reserved each semester for a student from the College.

Congressman Chandler will officially announce the creation of the internship when he visits the Centre campus Monday, July 18. He will address a gathering of Governor’s Scholars in the Norton Center Boardroom at 9 a.m.

“Centre College is one of Kentucky’s great assets, and I am excited to provide the opportunity for some of Centre’s outstanding young people to live and work in Washington,” says Congressman Chandler, who represents Kentucky’s Sixth District in the United States House of Representatives.

“Centre students and alumni have long provided civic and political leadership to the Commonwealth and to the nation,” adds Centre President John Roush. “We appreciate Congressman Chandler’s designating an internship position in his Washington office for Centre students.

”Prospective interns will complete an application process that will describe their qualifications and interest in the position, including a personal statement of how the internship will serve their academic and career goals.  A committee of Centre faculty and staff will screen the applicants and present nominees to Congressman Chandler for his selection. Deadlines for the application will be announced later.

Responsibilities of these unpaid internship positions include conducting tours of the Capitol, responding to constituent concerns, researching legislative issues, writing letters and working with the congressman’s staff on issues that affect the nation and Kentucky.
