Coolest Picture of Summer: We have a winner!

RELEASED: Sept. 15, 2005

DANVILLE, KY—The winner of Centre College's Coolest Picture of Summer contest is … drum roll please … Adam Allen, a senior double major in Spanish and international studies from Knoxville, Tenn.

There were a number of excellent submissions, but the winner, in a near unanimous vote among the Communications Office staff, was the shot of Adam holding his bicycle aloft in the desert with the least rainfall in the world, San Pedro de Atacama.

Allen spent the summer in Chile on an internship with Latin Immersion, a Spanish immersion school in Santiago.

In addition to his studies, Allen found time to do volunteer work for Nuestra Casa, a group specializing in the rehabilitation and relocation of the homeless in Santiago. And, of course, he traveled a great deal inside Chile, exploring Viña del Mar and Valparaíso on the Pacific coast, Pucón in southern Chile, and Punta Arenas in La Región Antártica, in addition to San Pedro de Atacama.

"Being abroad in a place like that can potentially be the most exciting and productive experience one can have on a spiritual level (and I do not mean that in a religious sense)," says Allen. "Words can't describe how I have changed... the Centre staff has simply given me an outlet for sharing corners of the Earth that we rarely get to see."

Allen will receive a $50 gift certificate to the new Centre Bookstore, now located in the Hub-Frankel building in downtown Danville. Top selections from the Coolest Photo of the Summer contest will be shown as photos of the week (some already have been). All submitted pictures will be in the running for a free digital camera in the Photo of the Year contest.
